      What is Lipogems Treatment?

This is regenerative medicine at its best. The FDA-cleared and award-winning Lipogems device employs innovative adipose tissue technology that uses fat tissue to support and “cushion” areas that have been injured to aid your body in healing itself. Your own adipose (fat) tissue taken from your abdomen or thigh areas is uniquely processed then precisely injected at the point of injury using ultrasound to guide the injections. The Lipogems procedure can only be administered by a licensed and trained medical provider.

If, for example, you struggle with injury or damage to your knee and would like to avoid a knee replacement, or even arthroscopic repair, regenerative medicine is an exciting new avenue of treatment. Through one treatment, you may be able to reduce pain considerably and improve function. If deemed appropriate for your medical condition or injury, Lipogems Treatment can offer an alternative to surgery.

Is Lipogems Treatment right for me?

Orthopedic injections are certainly less invasive than surgery, but they still are not without risk. At your consultation, we will take a full medical history and evaluate the other orthopedic options you've tried. Our physicians will ask and answer questions and determine together with you if you would be a good candidate for Lipogems Treatment.

If you’ve tried other treatments that have not given you the results you seek, then you probably are a good candidate for Lipogems Treatment. For more questions about Lipogems Treatment, speak with our experts today to see if this is the best treatment option for you. Call (240) 754-7954.

      Common questions about Lipogems Treatment

      How does Lipogems Treatment work?

Research has shown that as you age, your fat cells maintain reparative properties, unlike similar tissue which may lose healing capacity over time. Fat is known to have 100 to 500 times more reparative cells than other tissue. In orthopedic medicine, Lipogems technology is recognized for the supportive environment it creates to repair, replace, reconstruct, and support damaged or injured tissues.

What can I expect during my Lipogems Treatment?

During your Lipogems Treatment session, a small section of fat will first be removed, using minimally-invasive techniques. No general anesthesia is required, but a local anesthetic will be used. This section of fat is then processed using the Lipogems device which proceeds to break down the fat, removing the blood and other unwanted components, leaving behind only the selected reparative cells which are known as Lipogems. The injection site will be thoroughly cleaned, then a small needle will be used to inject your processed adipose tissue into your treatment area. The process can be repeated if you have multiple areas we need to treat for healing or pain relief.

      Is Lipogems Treatment safe?

Lipogems Treatment has an excellent safety profile. However, if you have blood clotting disorders, anemia, or cancer, or if you have skin cancer, open wounds, sores or irritated skin in the treatment area, Lipogems Treatment may be contraindicated. Lipogems injections are also not for you if you have certain allergies (e.g., to stainless steel), hemostatic (bleeding) dysfunction, are pregnant or nursing, or taking certain medications. We will discuss all of your safety concerns at our first session before proceeding with treatment.

How long does one treatment take?

At your first session, you will have a consultation that includes an examination and if needed an ultrasound examination, with one of our Lipogems trained physicians, to develop a personalized treatment plan and review any concerns or questions you may have. Treatment generally requires no more than 2 hours.

How long does it take to see the results?

Results can vary, but most people see improvements within six to eight weeks, sometimes up to twelve weeks, following the Lipogems procedure. Results will depend on the original severity of the injury or deterioration being treated. Participation in physical therapy may speed results.

      Are Lipogems Treatment painful?

These treatments provide little to no discomfort because of the use of local anesthetic. It is normal to expect some pain, swelling and soreness following a treatment session, but it should only be moderate and can be managed with rest and painkillers. You should delay strenuous activities until 3-4 weeks after your procedure.

      Are there any side effects?

While you may experience some swelling, soreness or redness at the injection site, these effects are only temporary. In general, treatment with Lipogems has minimal side effects. We have patients who experience no side effects at all.
